The Problems

What are you trying tofigure out?

Is this portfolio actually diversified?

Does this private investment make sense?

Is this manager actually adding value?

Can this research or investment process be automated?

Am I getting what I'm paying for?

What am I missing?

Different questions. Same need: independent capability to investigate the problem and determine what the evidence supports.
How It Works

One problem.Defined work.Fixed price.

01

Bring the problem

Tell Beyond Data what you're trying to figure out.

02

Define the question

Determine what actually needs to be answered.

03

Scope the work

Determine what the problem requires—research, analysis, data, tools, or something else.

04

Agree on a fixed price

The scope, expected work, and price are clear before the engagement begins.

05

Do the work

Research. Analyze. Test. Build. Investigate. Whatever the problem requires.

06

You decide

Review the work and the evidence. The decision remains yours.

Pricing reflects the scope, complexity, and responsibility of the engagement—not simply the hours required to complete it. The price is fixed before work begins.

Another problem? We can do it again. Some problems are ongoing. The work can be, too.

The evidence determines the conclusion.
You determine what happens next.

Beyond Data does not manage client assets or sell investment products. The value of the work does not depend on generating a transaction or recommending a change.

The objective is simple: answer the question as rigorously and independently as possible, then give you the evidence and reasoning to make the decision.

Experience

Nearly 30 years of investment problem-solving.

Beyond Data is built on experience spanning investment research, portfolio analysis, custom investment reporting, manager and hedge-fund due diligence, private-investment evaluation, investment advisory, and discretionary hedge-fund management — for institutions, foundations and endowments, family offices, and private investors.

That experience includes roughly fifteen years advising the National Academy of Sciences endowment; independent due diligence for institutional capital; investment work for substantial family offices; and building an advisory firm from an initial ~$25 million client relationship to nearly $2 billion.

It also includes more than a decade developing the proprietary analytical frameworks and tools that became Portfolio Inspector and TruthSeeker.

Different environments. Different problems. Same underlying job: figure out what matters.

Principles

Principles developed through the work.

Over the course of that career, I had the unusual opportunity to work with leading mathematicians, scientists, and investors, including Elwyn Berlekamp, Jerry Ostriker, Jim Simons, and Art Gelb. Those experiences continually challenged and sharpened how I approached investment problems.

01

Learn it from the ground up.

02

Rigor doesn't require perfection.

03

Complexity has to earn its place.

04

Independence only matters when the answer is inconvenient.

05

Build what the problem requires.

Published Work

The Work.

Beyond Data publishes analysis exploring many of the same questions clients bring to an engagement: portfolio structure, diversification, manager value, risk, investment process, and the tools used to investigate them.

What if the existing tools can't answer the question?

Portfolio Inspector and TruthSeeker both began that way.

Sometimes the answer requires research or due diligence. Sometimes it requires analysis. Sometimes it requires building something that doesn't yet exist.

What's sitting on your desk?

If there's an investment question you haven't had the time, tools, or independent perspective to answer, tell me what you're trying to figure out.

If I can help, I'll say so—and give you a fixed price. If I can't, I'll say that too.
